 The Paubox HIPAA Breach Report analyzes  protected health information (PHI) breaches affecting 500 or more people as reported to the HHS in January 2018.

 

HIPAA Breaches Ranked by People Affected

 

 

Top Three Breach Types

 

  • Network Server breaches ranked the highest with 279,865 people's PHI hacked or stolen in January. Network Server remained at the top spot for a second consecutive month.
  • Email breaches ranked second with PHI of 83,973 people breached.
  • Paper/Films breaches came in a distant third with 13,514 people having their PHI breached.

Bottom Three Breach Types

 

  • Laptop ranked as the lowest number of people's PHI being breached in January with 1,050 breaches.
  • Electronic Medical Record breaches ranked second lowest at 2,226.
  • Desktop Computer were the third lowest type of breach as ranked by people affected with 6,249.

HIPAA Breaches Ranked by Occurrence

 

 

The Most Common

  • Paper/Films ranked as the most common breach types in January with 7 reported breaches.
  • Email came in as the second most common breach type with 3 incidents.
  • Desktop Computer and Electronic Medical Record came in tied for third with 2 reported breaches.

The Least Common

 

  • Laptop, Network Server, and Other all tied for last with with 1 breach each.

Takeaways

Network Server remained in the dubious top spot for the second straight month as the highest ranking breach vector for people's PHI to get stolen or lost. Email ranked second for both HIPAA breaches ranked by people affected and for breaches ranked by occurrence.
