Let's get started! Here are the top 5 HIPAA moments from the month of May.

1. HIPAA Violation Prevention: What is Tailgating?

We wrote a blog post this month on HIPAA violation prevention due to Tailgating. Now, you might be thinking, "Tailgating? Like  b arbecuing and throwing back size 12 sudzies?" That tailgating is a good time, but this kind of HIPAA violation is not a good time. Tailgating is when an unauthorized individual stands by a gateway, like a door and elevator, and gains unauthorized entry, resulting in a HIPAA violation. And that violation can be costly.

2. $2.4 Million HIPAA Settlement for Texas Health System

In Texas,  Memorial Hermann Health System paid $2.4 million to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for releasing the name of a patient and other personal health information (PHI ) in a press release. That's a dent in the bank. Learn more about this hefty HIPAA Settlement price tag.

3. 3 Key Lessons Learned From WannaCry Ransomware Cyberattacks

We here at Paubox don't usually tear up, but any form of ransomware makes us wanna cry. But for the sake of being informative, we'll pull ourselves together. All jokes aside, ransomware is a serious matter. But lucky for you, we have three takeaways from this incident so you don't become victim to a ransomware attack.

  1. Train your staff with proper user training
  2. Implement a secure email security system
  3. Assume you will be attacked

It's always better to be safe than sorry.

4. Insufficient risk analysis leads to breach and $400,000 settlement

Are you sensing a theme with this month's HIPAA news? HIPAA violations can get costly! Due to an insufficient risk analysis and insufficient preventive actions, Metro Community Provider Network (MCPN), a federally-qualified health center (FQHC), incurred a breach and has agreed to pay $400,000 to the Office for Civil Rights (OCR). To learn from this mistake, MCPN will also implement a corrective action plan as well.
