Medical Informatics World Conference in Boston

Written by Hoala Greevy | April 05, 2016

We flew to Boston this week to attend the Medical Informatics World Conference. It was my first time in Boston and we were promptly greeted with an April coat of snow.

Although we weren't allowed to take pictures during the presentations, one of my favorites of day one was by Albert Villarin, M.D., CMIO at Staten Island University Hospital, Northwell Health System. He shared his experiences integrating a Clinical Decision Support (CDS) product into their existing EHR platform. He also still plays baseball, pretty cool. Later in the day, I joined an interactive breakout discussion group on "Leveraging the Cloud and Knowledge Sharing for Clinical Decision Support and Analytics."

My takeaway from the discussion group: Cloud computing is still a very new topic in the healthcare industry. Aside from us, I'm not sure anyone at the table was actually using the cloud in their organization. As it turns out, Health 2.0 is also holding a conference in Boston this week- Health Experience Refactored. As such, I ran into Niko Skievaski, co-founder of Redox at the Medical Informatics afternoon cocktail reception. He kindly invited us to their 8pm mixer at District Hall.

Greg Hoffman and I made some new friends at the mixer, including Finnish engineer Harri Hursti, creator of the Hursti Hack. His new project is Zyptonite.

We also met Seth Gray, VP of Accounts & Strategy at Cement Marketing, who was in town performing market research for a client. The guy also makes his own leather bags, very cool.

After everyone had a chance to enjoy beverages and networking, Niko got in front of the crowd of about 80 and shared a bit about what Redox does. Thanks for hosting us Niko!
