Paubox customers: Paubox Zoom social mixer (August 2024)

The Paubox Zoom social mixer for August 2024 was a roundtable discussion between Paubox customers covering topics like healthcare marketing, the Crowdstrike attack. EHR challenges, and where AI can help in email security.

What happened

August's social mixer followed our standard format - a free-flowing, open-ended discussion amongst healthcare IT and cybersecurity professionals.

The mixer was fast-paced, and we covered a lot of topics. Paubox customers shared how they use Paubox, the other products they work with, and novel approaches to shared challenges, including how HIPAA compliant tools can help in compliance with other regulations.

Quotes of the day:

  • "We're using just about every Paubox product, including texting, which we like a lot."
  • "FERPA and HIPAA have similar requirements."

Our takeaways:

  • "FERPA and HIPAA have similar requirements."
  • The Crowdstrike outage impacted several attendees, including one customer who'd just signed up with them.
    • Phone systems, EHR providers, and dictation software were down for Crowdstrike customers.
    • Other attendees were impacted but found their issues were resolved quickly, sometimes even before the workday began.
    • One attendee was stranded due to flight cancellations.
    • The consensus was that the $10 Uber Eats coupon offered by Crowdstrike was not a popular peace offering.
  • When asked where AI could help in inbound email security, opinions differed.
    • Some attendees wanted AI to help filters be more aggressive, while others wanted fewer quarantined emails.
    • Shared blacklists were a popular feature request.
  • When discussing Paubox Texting, opinions were mixed on whether recipients should be able to reply.
    • A fascinating topic was how a relatively simple text message announcement to patients resulted in an uptick in appointment requests and patient engagement.
    • Handling replies is very context-specific, with added pressure for those working in mental health.
    • Top-level control over communications would be helpful.
  • Doctors and patients alike don't want to download apps, so HIPAA compliant texting solves a significant communication challenge.
  • Despite the prevalence of digitization, paper records are still a security and HIPAA violation risk.
  • Misdirected emails due to Gmail's autofill are a risk, too.
  • Build a culture where employees feel okay reporting mistakes they've made.
  • ChatGPT is useful in spinning up small programming scripts to make IT work easier.

The bottom line: Paubox customers use a broad range of tools and strategies to keep their email HIPAA compliant, protect their organizations, and find efficiencies.
