Paubox Kahikina Scholarship analytics (2024 cohort)

Written by Hoala Greevy | August 22, 2024

Two years ago I wrote a post on the demographics of the Paubox Kahikina Scholarship. What high schools are they coming from? Are there trends in the colleges they choose? Where did they grow up?

We did the same last year with a post called, 2023 at a glance: Paubox Kahikina Scholarship.

Heading into this year, let's dive in again- here's a look at solely this year's class of 15 new Paubox Kahikina Scholarship recipients.

High School by type

The demographics here hold steady with past cohorts. A majority of scholarship recipients went to a private high school:

  • This year's cohort: 73.3% went to a private high school
  • All past cohorts: 84.4%

As a proud graduate of McKinley High School, I look forward to the day where we see more applicants from public high schools like mine.

High School by location

The data here holds steady here as well, with one notable outlier. Most recipients grew up and went to high school on Oʻahu, the stateʻs most populous island.

The notable outlier is Luana Sprout, who attended high school in Texas. She is the first recipient who grew up outside of Hawaiʻi. Welcome, Luana!

  • This year's cohort: 66.7% went to high school on Oʻahu
  • All past cohorts: 72.7%

College by state

This pie chart, college attended by state, was not part of prior analytics.

By glancing at the pie chart we did last year on specific colleges attended, we can see that:

  • This year's cohort: 20% attend college in California
  • All past cohorts: At least 32% go to college in California

College by type

Hereʻs another chart we haven't generated before, what type of college are recipients attending?

Based on glancing at the most frequently attended private colleges of past cohorts (Stanford, Harvard University, University of Southern California, Purdue, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology), we generally conclude:

  • This year's cohort: 33.3% attend a private college
  • All past cohorts: At least 35.7% go to a private college

Final thoughts

It's my understanding at least 90% of Native Hawaiians living in Hawaiʻi go to a public high school. We have more work to do to reach them.
