The Paubox Kahikina Scholarship helps Native Hawaiian students pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) and Tech in general. Joshua Parker was one of the Paubox Kahikina Scholarship 2021 recipients and is now attending Harvard University, studying toward an economics degree. Here is a word from Joshua:
“I just wrapped up my junior year and couldn’t be happier with my decision to major in economics.
Every morning I ate my same breakfast — a bowl of oatmeal, two hard boiled eggs, and banana — while I scrolled through The Wall Street Journal on my phone. Thanks to my economics classes, I could finally keep up with the articles and actually understood what the heck is going on in the world.
I went full “finance bro” mode, taking courses on central banking, personal finance, economic sociology, statistics, and econometrics. I joined the Harvard Alternative Investment Club and worked with Copley Equity Partners, a middle-market private equity firm. This summer, I’ll be interning at UBS Investment Bank in Los Angeles.
When I wasn’t studying, I explored the city with my roommates. Some key takeaways: Toro has delicious food, Puttshack is great for a night out with friends, and the Seaport firepit is the best place to read your favorite book. I was also fortunate that my auntie, uncle, mom and dad came to visit. I got to show them around campus and the greater Boston area.
