Colossal data leak exposes 26 billion records

Written by Farah Amod | January 24, 2024

Cybersecurity researchers recently discovered a massive database containing 26 billion leaked records. This incident, dubbed the "Mother of all Breaches," has raised concerns about the security of personal information and its potential implications for individuals and organizations.

What happened

Cybersecurity researcher Bob Dyachenko, in collaboration with the team at Cybernews, discovered the 12-terabyte database. While the exact culprits behind the leak remain unknown, the database comprises both credentials and sensitive data, adding to the gravity of the situation.

What was said

According to the researchers at Cybernews, “The dataset is extremely dangerous as threat actors could leverage the aggregated data for a wide range of attacks, including identity theft, sophisticated phishing schemes, targeted cyberattacks, and unauthorized access to personal and sensitive accounts.”

By the numbers

Cybernews further stated that the leak has significantly impacted various brands and government organizations. Tencent topped the list with 1.5 billion records, followed by Chinese social media platform Weibo with 504 million records, MySpace with 260 million, Twitter with 281 million, and Wattpad with 271 million records. Other affected brands included LinkedIn, AdultFriendFinder, Adobe, MyFitnessPal, and Canva. Government organizations from numerous countries, including the US, Brazil, Germany, Turkey, and the Philippines, were also hit.

Why it matters

While the immediate impact of this data leak may not be as severe as anticipated, it serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with personal data security. The team believes the leaked dataset mostly comes from past breaches but likely includes new, unpublished data. Cyberattacks and data breaches are becoming increasingly common, and individuals and organizations must remain vigilant to protect their sensitive information.
