Artspiration is a leader in the art therapy community, teaching others how to transition to online sessions during the COVID-19 outbreak.
Deanna Barton is a board-certified art therapist who runs her own practice, Artspiration, based in Florida.
Deanna counsels young women of color who are dealing with issues related to depression, anxiety, and past trauma. Art is a way to help Deanna’s clients dive deeper into their issues and concerns and utilize art not just as an opportunity for self-expression, but also to explore things from different perspectives and to heal.
Deanna also works at a homeless shelter, helping families cope with homelessness and build skills to help them start the next phase of their life.
Deanna Barton, Owner of Artspiration
We have a large waiting room where typically everyone’s gathered and sitting very closely together. And then as an art therapist, our art supplies are communal. So that also presents a bit of an issue if someone were to sneeze or cough, and trying to keep everything very clean. Moving to online therapy just seemed like the best way to keep everyone safe as we continue to see how this whole COVID-19 thing unfolds.

In the face of the coronavirus outbreak, Artspiration moves all therapy sessions online
Deanna used email encrypted by Paubox to let her clients know that for the time being, all therapy will be conducted online.
We recently spoke to Deanna about her decision. She explained it this way:
Artspiration teaches others in the art therapy community how to manage online counseling
For Deanna, the transition to online therapy was not as difficult as for some other counselors; she has been performing online therapy for some of her clients for over a year. “I’m pretty comfortable with conducting my sessions through a virtual platform,” she said.
In an effort to help other therapists who are not as tech-savvy, Deanna conducted a best practices for online therapy workshop for other art therapists in the Florida Art Therapy Association. “There are a lot of questions and a lot of people don’t know what to do, she explained. “So I’m trying to utilize my expertise to guide others and get them set up.”
Paubox enables Deanna to focus on her clients without worrying about HIPAA compliance
In addition to communicating with clients about the switch to online sessions, Deanna has also shared resources via email about how to manage stress and anxiety while we are forced to isolate and practice social distancing.
“I will also be continuing to share those types of resources and information to ensure everyone’s maintaining their emotional well being,” she stated.
Paubox has “really made the process a lot easier to keep everybody in the loop and know that the information that I’m sharing . . . is all encrypted and safe and staying confidential,” Deanna said.
Deanna especially appreciates the ease of use. “I really don’t have to do much because it’s all . . . built into my Gmail. So I can just go and compose an email and know that it’s going through the process of encryption prior to getting delivered.”
In the past 12 months alone, Paubox has encrypted nearly 972 emails sent. Since Paubox encrypts all emails by default, no one had to spend any time wondering about whether or not to encrypt an email; it was done automatically. And all the email recipients had to do was click “open” to read an email – no password or portal required.
