HIPAA Center is designed to give you a quick glance into the Top 5 moments that we saw happen in the HIPAA industry this month.
In this May installation of HIPAA Center by Paubox, HIPAA violations result in horribly high fines… and Hoala’s passion for providing secure email encryption literally burns!
Let’s get started! Here are the top 5 HIPAA moments from the month of May.
1. HIPAA Violation Prevention: What is Tailgating?
That tailgating is a good time, but this kind of HIPAA violation is not a good time.
Tailgating is when an unauthorized individual stands by a gateway, like a door and elevator, and gains unauthorized entry, resulting in a HIPAA violation. And that violation can be costly.
2. $2.4 Million HIPAA Settlement for Texas Health System
In Texas, Memorial Hermann Health System paid $2.4 million to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for releasing the name of a patient and other personal health information (PHI) in a press release. That’s a dent in the bank.

3. 3 Key Lessons Learned From WannaCry Ransomware Cyberattacks
We here at Paubox don’t usually tear up, but any form of ransomware makes us wanna cry. But for the sake of being informative, we’ll pull ourselves together.
All jokes aside, ransomware is a serious matter. But lucky for you, we have three takeaways from this incident so you don’t become victim to a ransomware attack.
- Train your staff with proper user training
- Implement a secure email security system
- Assume you will be attacked
It’s always better to be safe than sorry.

4. Insufficient risk analysis leads to breach and $400,000 settlement
Are you sensing a theme with this month’s HIPAA news? HIPAA violations can get costly!
Due to an insufficient risk analysis and insufficient preventive actions, Metro Community Provider Network (MCPN), a federally-qualified health center (FQHC), incurred a breach and has agreed to pay $400,000 to the Office for Civil Rights (OCR).
To learn from this mistake, MCPN will also implement a corrective action plan as well.

5. Catching Up with Make-A-Wish Hawaii
In lighter news, we recently caught up with our dear friend in Hawaii, the Make-A-Wish Hawaii foundation. Our Founder CEO Hoala Greevy visited the foundation’s office in Hawaii a few weeks ago, and as our first customer, they’ll always hold a special place in our hearts.
But they’re not just beloved by us. Of the 63 chapters nationwide, they grant the most wishes of any chapter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation
