Five Stitches to the Face – Random Acts of Violence in San Francisco

If you work in tech, San Francisco is everything Honolulu is not. Opportunity. Access to talent. Access to capital. Access to new ideas. Opportunity.

San Francisco is also home to rampant crime and unchecked drug abuse in plain view. Needles, human feces, and for a time electric scooters, are everywhere.

Random Acts of Violence in San Francisco

The Million Dollar Scar - Electric Scooters and Needles on Market Street

On Friday, June 22nd, I was attacked in broad daylight by a homeless man. This happened a block from our office in SOMA, while I was walking with a buddy of mine who stands 6’3. I can assure you, we were not the smallest people walking down Mission Street.

A guy wearing a tank top and a dark cap (and maybe a goatee) suddenly walks up, doesn’t say a word, and unloads a left fist right into my jaw. I stumble back onto a parked car and realize I can’t stand up straight. This guy sucker punched me for no reason and I got my bell rung.

I look down, my Paubox t-shirt is now covered in blood, and this cracked out homeless guy is wanting to fight. I’m not sure what’s going on, I think I may have a concussion, but I square up as well. Fortunately, my buddy Patrick Barnes steps in between us and eventually the assailant walks off.

He didn’t steal anything. He didn’t say anything. He didn’t even bother to run away.

Unfortunately, I’m not the only one.

This is also part of life in San Francisco.

Driving down I-280 to pitch in Palo Alto

After calling the cops, filing a report and taking an ambulance to St. Francis Memorial, I end up with five stitches to the face and a jaw contusion. And that was my Friday.

Come Monday, there wasn’t time for self-pity.

There’s a team to lead, new software to sell, investor pitches to give, and presentations to delegate (there’s no way I could do a webinar for 90 minutes to NASA that week as was originally planned).
