Alvord-Taylor in Eugene, OR supports individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities, including people who live in group homes as well as those who live in their own homes. It opened its first group home in 1970 and now supports 48 individuals in 16 group homes and an additional 24 people living independently.
The organization, which received its nonprofit designation in 1974, is dedicated to achieving its mission of a vibrant and unified community for all. It started with the drive to deinstitutionalize people with developmental disabilities, and now it has set its sights on fully integrating people with developmental and intellectual disabilities into the communities in which they live.

Challenge
Staying up to date in the twenty-first century means taking advantage of electronic communication technology. Although Alvord-Taylor had never been breached, the organization needed to ensure that it was only sending HIPAA compliant email.
“We knew that using fax and snail mail wasn’t going to be a functional, long-term solution, but we understood that expecting perfection from software wasn’t going to be reasonable or effective for our organization. “We did a lot of research, and we found that Paubox was the most user-friendly option,” said Sarah Jones, Manager, Quality Assurance, Alvord-Taylor. “In addition to passwords, other solutions also rely on the judgment of staff to decide what emails to encrypt and which ones not to encrypt, and we don’t have to worry about that at all.”
Human error is the most common cause of security breaches, so removing the human element gives Alvord-Taylor’s staff confidence that they are appropriately securing the protected health information (PHI) of the people they support.
Results
Using Paubox Email Suite has streamlined the workflow at Alvord-Taylor. “People are spending a lot less time standing by the fax machine, sending things multiple times before they actually go through. It’s improving the quality of life for employees while they’re working, and it’s saving a lot of time,” Jones noted.
