We sat down with Moe Orabi, founder and CEO of Scarlet Plus. Orabi generally focuses on operations and marketing for Scarlet Plus’ clients who own healthcare, mental health, and psychiatric practices. With a background in cybersecurity, he helps clients get more patients while staying HIPAA compliant and maintaining secure data practices.
The challenge
Scarlet Plus helps new healthcare practices get their website rolling to bring in new patients. The company ensures clients are focused on security and set up for success from the start.
Most practices will also need to develop a security team, a timely and costly endeavor for organizations that may not yet have a steady revenue stream. To help practices, Scarlet Plus wanted an email API that could be set up quickly and recommended to clients. When the company started, they used Mailgun, but Orabi discovered that Mailgun does not actively monitor if unauthorized individuals are accessing data.
In Mailgun's Business Associate Addendum, the company shared that if they become aware of a security incident, they will report it to the healthcare practice they work with. However, Mailgun admits that not every email may be secure and will not monitor who accesses or stores information. By creating a gray area in their Business Associate Agreement, Mailgun could open up healthcare organizations to HIPAA violations or complications.
On top of this, Mailgun was more expensive, especially comparing what Mailgun offered to what Paubox does. By stumbling onto Paubox's blog, Orabi knew this API was worth looking into. He also considered a few other platforms, like Google Cloud and Amazon Web service. Still, he felt Paubox would be more straightforward for him and his clients.
The solution
Orabi decided to test out Paubox's API. "I started with just the simple documentation. I had the code from your documentation on the site," he explained. For him, the process was quick and easy. He also appreciated that Paubox doesn't require clients to actively manage or monitor security; once it's up and running, the experience can be fairly hands-off.
After setting up the program for their first domain, Orabi set it up on another. The second time around, there were a few issues from the client's end, and Orabi needed help from the Paubox team, who quickly troubleshooted and resolved the problem. That was enough for Orabi to know he could confidently refer clients to Paubox.
Soon, Orabi began referring practices to Paubox's Email Suite. "About 15 clients purchased Paubox through Scarlet, but the other did that from their end…most of my clients are using Paubox because we require that on our system," Orabi said. "We would not accept any clients who did not purchase Paubox Email Suite, because it helps us a lot in maintaining security and HIPAA compliance," he added.
The result
"[The Paubox API] is so great, actually, it's really, really great," said Orabi. His development team is "saying that this is the best solution that we have."
"I know there's a great team behind Paubox's API; this is what I needed for my company as a startup. I needed a company that I can rely on for security… That's why I picked Paubox." Orabi's team also likes Paubox Forms, which allows practices to collect data from patients securely. Before Paubox Forms, the team used Jotforms to collect insurance information and more, but Paubox has now saved themselves and their clients money while simplifying the process.
Paubox constantly works to improve our system and meet customer needs, so we asked Orabi if he wished anything was different. "I'm not looking for more than what you provide, but if you have more, I'm ready," he said.
His team couldn't be happier with the time and money Paubox has saved them. Most importantly, though, he can feel assured that patient data is always secure and that their communication is HIPAA compliant.
